News about Janie Nicoll
'FAKE GOLD RING' Sculpture has been adopted by
The Centre, Cumbernauld.
We are delighted to announce the adoption of the sculpture by Glasgow based artist Janie Nicoll, as part of The Sculpture Placement Group's Sculpture Adoption Scheme. This is an adoption service for sculptures, seeking to match works of art with new guardians.
SPG have worked with artists to identify sculptural works in long-term storage with no current future that they are happy to offer for adoption by community groups and other organisations. They have created a catalogue representing 95 sculptures by 54 different artists, which can be found on their website at
https://sculptureplacementgroup.org.uk/sculpture-adoption-scheme/
'FAKE GOLD RING' sculpture is a facsimile of a ring found by the artist, while out running in the Maryhill area of Glasgow, and plays with the notions of value, scale and context. It is a sculpture that was originally created for the exhibition ‘Meddle With The Devil’, at the Park Gallery, Falkirk as part of a year long SAC pARTners residency undertaken by the artist at Callendar House in 2008. It was subsequently exhibited in a variety of locations in Glasgow including the Vault Art Fair at The Briggait, in 2011. It has spent the rest of the time in storage in a dusty workshop in Maryhill, and was recently dismantled in order to fit into the artist's current studio in South Block. This adoption has seen the sculpture restored to its former glory, given a brand new plinth and relocated to The Centre, Cumbernauld, where we hope it will experience a new audience and a new lease of life.

'Greening Woodlands' project for Woodlands Community Garden, Glasgow
Woodlands Community Development Trust asked me to get involved with their "Greening West Princes Street" now called 'Greening Woodlands' project in Woodlands, the area where I live in Glasgow. This has involved making banners and signs for the planters in the street using drawings and text created by the Pupils of Hillhead High School and other members of the community. It will also include a photography project that documents gardeners in the area.
You can see a video of myself and WCDT manager Tim Cowen, talking about plans for the development of a new community hub and artists studios at the Woodlands Workspace. https://vimeo.com/175737872
