In Kind Project for Glasgow International 2018 www.inkindproject.info
‘In Kind’ is a collaborative project by visual artists, Janie Nicoll and Ailie Rutherford, examining the “below the water-line” economy of the Visual Arts using Glasgow International 2018 as an initial case study; charting the unseen, unaccounted for efforts that enable GI to take place; exploring the support in kind, unpaid labour, favours, gifts and volunteer hours that go into making GI a success.
This project measures the huge outpouring of creative energy and generosity normally unseen and undocumented, illustrating how artists support the creation of not just their own work but also the work of others. Throughout GI2018 the artists operated from a mobile unit situated at CCA, Platform and Trongte 103, acting as both a focus point to collate data and a multi-media visual display unit. The mobile unit was a catalyst for conversation, discussion and a series of curated events that aimed to interrogate the themes of artist precarity, and the sustainability of the sector.
