"Reading between the Lines" exhibition
During June 2012 I was lucky enough to be selected as Visual Artist in Residence at the ninth Borders Book Festival. I spent a week at Harmony House, Melrose a beautiful National Trust Property which hosts the festival.
The House is used as a base for the Festival team and provides accommodation for many of the authors and speakers. I had the unique experience of staying at Harmony House both before the festival began, observing the preparations and then while the festival took place. I got to meet many of the interesting authors and personalities who were taking part in the festival. This included Peter Higgs, Rory Bremner, Jeremy Vine, Kirsty Wark, Mark Beaumont, David Frost, Liz Lochead, Charles Glass amongst many others
I am currently exhibiting a new body of work based on the week spent at Harmony House as the first Artist in Residence at Borders Book Festival (June 2012). My remit was to get ‘right to the heart of’ the book festival, and for this exhibition I have created new artworks that use text as a starting point.
During the Book Festival I asked visitors to the festival to fill out a questionnaire that asked questions about their reasons for being at the festival and their interest in books. I also asked the authors and speakers to answer similar questions about their experience of Borders Book Festival and to sum up the BBF in just one word. I used this information as source material to create a series of collage works that scrutinize and explore the handwriting and words selected by the visitors and speakers. A selection of these images will be used as large scale banners to decorate the BBF marquees at the festival in June.
